AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup

The AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022 is a biennial football competition organised by the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF). First played in 1996, the tournament is contested by the national ‘A’ teams of South East Asia and boasts record TV ratings.

I was contacted by the ASEAN Football Federation to make a mural for Singapore that featured the country's AFF Cup mask (link image to all the country masks). Because every country was required to use their assigned AFF Cup mask in their mural, all murals turned out to be a football player wearing said mask with details specific to their home country.

I saw this as an opportunity to make Singapore stand out, while adding a deeper meaning to the artwork. It Was Written takes advantage of the AFF Cup mask's angularity, pays tribute to Singapore's winning heritage in the competition, and alludes to the possibility of adding another trophy to the cabinet. Singaporean football fans were hyped.
